The Falcons men’s golf team placed fifth in the MAC tournament in Indianapolis to end the season. Four of the teams six players finished inside the top 30 after three rounds of play. Junior Angelo Luciani led the way for the Falcons, finishing third individually with a score of +6. The team as a whole shot 909 (+56) on the weekend.
Luciani had a highlight play in round one, knocking in a hole in one on the ninth hole, the first of his career. His third-place finish in the tournament was the highest placed individual performance in the last 20 years for Bowling Green. Freshman Pedro Garcia was the teams next highest scorer, shooting +15, good enough for a 20th place finish. Garcia took home a first-place finish in March at the Babygrande Donald Ross Intercollegiate tournament, becoming the first freshman to do so since 2014.
Last year’s team finished 7th in MAC championship, and this year showed progress. Of the six starters in this year’s tournament, Ethan Irvine is the only senior in the group. The other five players are all underclassmen, and will look to build off of what coach John Powers considered a successful season:
“I’m incredibly proud of what we accomplished this week. It’s been a long season of growth, and our team showed tremendous grit and perseverance to earn a fifth-place finish. With five first-time competitors at the MAC Championship, finishing fifth is a significant accomplishment.”
