The NCAA Division I Cabinet announced new transfer portal windows for multiple sports Wednesday, highlighted by notable changes for men’s and women’s college basketball. The changes were made following a November recommendation from both the Men’s and Women’s Basketball Oversight Committees.
The transfer portal for both sports will open for 15 days after the respective national championship games. With the change, the women’s portal will be open from April 6 through April 20, while the men’s portal will run from April 7 through April 21.
Additionally, when a coaching change occurs, a 15-day transfer portal window will open five days after a new coach is hired or publicly announced. If no head coach is announced within 30 days of the previous head coach’s departure, the 15-day portal will then open, provided the 31st day falls after the national championship.
The D1 Cabinet also clarified the rule for mid-year transfers in basketball, ruling that student-athletes are not eligible to play at a second school if they are enrolled in another school during the first academic semester, regardless of whether they play a sport or not.
Last year, the men’s and women’s basketball transfer portal was open for 30 days after the second round of the NCAA Tournament, from March 24 through April 22.
