BGSU women’s tennis (6-5) wasn’t able continue their one-game winning streak, losing by a final score of 4-3 against UC Irvine (6-4) at Anteater Tennis Stadium in Irvine, California. The Falcons started strong early in doubles matches, but ultimately lost after losing momentum in the singles matches.
Doubles
Starting the day on the first court, the Falcons Tia Clemens and Qianyu Liu won their match by a score of 6-3. This was shortly followed up by an exciting match featuring the Falcons’ Libby Blair and Leticia Fonseca, who ended up winning the thriller by a score of 6-4, securing the first point of the day for the Falcons.
In the last doubles match, Konstantina Adamopoulou and Brynn Chaffee lost a close match against UC Irvine’s Bella Pitchford and Quin Brady by a score of 6-3. With the conclusion of the last match, the Falcons looked to add to their 1-0 lead over the Anteaters heading into singles play.
Singles
The singles matches were a different story from what we saw in the doubles matches. With the Falcons only able to get two victories during singles, they fell to the Anteaters in the other four matches, giving the Anteaters their four points on the day.
The two victories in singles for the Falcons came in part to Fonseca and Chaffee. Fonseca won her match in two sets, allowing only 6 points throughout the match. Chaffee did not have as easy a time with her match, as we saw her winning the first set by a score of 6-1, but then falling in the second 6-4. This set up an exciting final game where Chaffee was able to secure the win by a score of 6-3, winning the match outright 3-2.
The Falcons were only able to secure two points after singles play, and combined with their point from doubles, they would end the day with three points. However, the Anteaters would pick up four points of their own in the singles matches, which would propel them to victory by a final score of 4-3.
What’s Next?
The Falcons will stay in California, but will be traveling south to San Diego to face Point Loma at the PNLU Tennis Courts in San Diego, California, on Tuesday, March 3 at 6 p.m.
