BGSU softball (12-8) had a start-to-finish dominating performance against Charleston Southern (5-19) in the last game of the weekend series in Charleston, South Carolina. Pitching and defense played a big role in the convincing win.
Senior Mackenzie Krafcik pitched all seven innings for the Falcons, giving up zero runs for her fourth career complete-game shutout.
Krafcik had arguably her best start of the season today for the Falcons. She pitched a gem throughout seven innings, only allowing eight hits and one walk, while also striking out three batters. Krafcik was able to keep the Buccaneers at bay and get the Falcons out of multiple tough situations.
The Falcon defense didn’t give up a single error, and backed up by a fiery offense, were able to come out with a win.
The offense started early for the Falcons, when at the top of the second, Cameron Kaufman was able to reach base off an error, before Addie Martin hit a two-run home run to bring her home and give the Falcons a quick 2-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, the offense continued, and we saw the Falcons load the bases after a couple of walks and an error from the Buccaneers’ defense. This led to Hannah Simko coming up to bat and hitting a pop fly just deep enough to left field for Delaney Davis to tag up and score from third. This would extend the Bowling Green lead to 3-0, and they would end the inning stranding three runners on base.
The Falcons did not take their foot off the pedal in the fifth, after a pitch hit Ashley Chevalier and Martin walked, Hanna Massaro ripped a single to left field, which scored Chevalier and moved Martin up to third base. The Falcon lead had now been extended 4-0.
In the sixth, Kaufman came up to the plate with runners at second and third and clobbered a ball into left field for a two-run single, adding insurance runs for the Falcons and bringing the score to 6-0.
In the final inning of the day, the Falcons found themselves with the bases loaded once again. Taylor Behrendt was up to bat and hit yet another two-run single to left field for the Falcons, which would be the last runs for the day for them, and brought the score to 8-0.
