BGSU men’s soccer hosted the Ashland University Eagles in the first home matchup of the spring season at Cochrane Stadium in Bowling Green, Ohio, with the Falcons winning by a final score of 1-0 in a feisty affair.
The physicality started early in this friendly, with the Eagles’ Antonio Soto picking up a yellow card just a couple of minutes into the game after a rough tackle on forward Adin Ibrahimovic. Later in the half, the Eagles added another yellow card, this time from Dylan Fetherston,
Early into the second period, Fetherston fouled Falcon forward Tyson McCoy. He received a second yellow card, which equates to a red card, and Fetherston was kicked out of the match. Due to the match being a scrimmage, the Eagles were allowed to play with 11 men for the remainder of the match, rather than the usual 10 men on the field after a red card.
The only goal of the match came with 20 minutes left in the 2nd period of play. The Eagles keeper came out to play the ball and kicked it directly into McCoy in the box. He then passed it over to Ryko Bodurov, who slotted the ball in the lower right corner of the net to give BGSU a 1-0 lead.
The Falcons had lots of scoring chances in the match, with the Falcons attempting 16 shots and forcing the Ashland keeper, Augustin Warnod, to make 15 saves throughout the match.
Ashland University picked up another red card in the middle of the third period, after an Eagles defender took down McCoy from behind when he was alone on goal. This resulted in a second player being kicked out for the Eagles, and in a non-scrimmage, they would’ve been down to nine men on the field.
Bowling Green has two more regular games in the 2026 spring league before playing in one final game for the Spring, depending on how they finish in the College Spring League standings.
“We’re going to stay true to our competitive values, we want to be tough, we want to be accountable, and we want to be intense,” said head coach Eric Nichols postgame. “There are certainly areas we need to work on, but those are the areas that I thought we really lacked in the fall, and those areas are the foundation of our program, so that’s really what I’ve challenged this group to do.”
The Falcons will host The Ohio State University at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 27, at Cochrane Stadium in Bowling Green, Ohio, for their second game of the CSL.
