The BGSU softball team (15-17, 3-8 MAC) dropped both games of their doubleheader against the Kent State Golden Flashes (16-16, 6-5 MAC) on Friday, losing the first game 7-6 and losing the second game 1-0.
The Falcons were coming in off a 2-1 series loss to Buffalo the previous weekend and a one-sided non conference loss to Ohio State.
Game One
Neither team scored until the fourth inning, when both teams combined for eight runs. Senior middle infielder Hannah Hunt scored two on a single, giving BG a 2-0 lead. Senior utility Katie Hutter hit an RBI single, scoring junior shortstop Cameron Kaufman. Redshirt sophomore Addie Martin scored thanks to a Kent fielding error, and Hutter scored on an RBI single from junior outfielder Peyton Steffes.
The 5-0 lead that the Falcons took into the bottom of the fourth did not last long; Kent State junior outfielder Ashlyn Porter scored on a wild pitch from senior pitcher Mackenzie Krafcik. Freshman infielder Gabby Quinn scored on a ground-out by Alex Trevena, and Ciara Camacho added another run off a sacrifice fly by sophomore outfielder Brooke Aberle.
In the 5th, Kaufman scored off an RBI double from Hunt. This was the last score of the game for the Falcons; however, Kent State added a solo home run, an RBI walk, and a two-RBI single in the sixth inning. Neither team scored in the seventh, as the Falcons took the 7-6 loss.
Game Two
Sophomore Morgan Beckham pitched the second game, allowing just one earned run. Unfortunately for the Falcons, they were unable to score on six hits. Three of those hits came from Steffes, who went 3-4 from the plate in game two with two stolen bases. Steffes now has a .469 batting average in MAC play.
The Falcons left three runners on base in the second game. The only score for either team came in the sixth inning, when Aberle scored on a sac fly.
Beckham was charged with the loss in both games; her record is now 3-3. Steffes was the only Falcon baserunner to reach third base during the second game.
