BGSU baseball (31-16, 17-10 MAC) won another mid-week game on Wednesday against the Butler Bulldogs (14-34, 3-12 Big East) in what would become a comeback win for the Orange and Brown. Defeating the Bulldogs 9-7.
Butler gave the Falcons everything they could handle in the opening inning which was highlighted by sophomore outfielder Ryan Drumm smacking a home run over the head of junior lefty pitcher Luke Krouse that shot the Bulldogs out to a 3-0 lead.
Bowling Green would have to dig deep to take their first lead of the game, but would be quieted by three straight one-two-three straight innings by Butler’s freshman right-handed pitcher Jack Griffiths.
Despite the tough start by Krouse and hot start by Griffiths both teams would ride the carousel of pitchers with Butler using seven throughout the game and BG using eight.
In the end the Falcon’s offense would be able to figure out the pitching staff of the opposing bulldogs, scoring five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take the lead.
The fourth inning proved to be the strongest for the Falcons as junior catcher Garrett Wright managed to break his own single-season record in hit by pitches (23), extending it to 25 with back-to-back hit by pitches. Wright also extended his on-base streak to 35 games with his home run in the fourth.
“Garrett Wright is the best player on every field he steps on, and I think he’s graduated to that point,” head coach Kyle Hallock said. “Since we’re handing out degrees around here, he’s graduated to being the best player on the field no matter who we are playing and where we are going.”
The two teams would swap runs but the Falcons would manage to outlast the Bulldogs with a final score of 9-7.
Junior catcher Zach Horky also extended his hitting streak to 10 games and his on-base streak to 17 games.
Freshman CJ Boudreaux earned his first collegiate career win for the Orange and Brown. The freshman was one of the six pitchers for BG on the day, pitching the entire sixth inning.
Senior pitcher Connar Penrod continued his record breaking year , earning his 12th save of the season. With now 13 career saves, Penrod has moved past former Falcon Jeremy Spezia into fourth place on the program’s career saves list.
Next up for Bowling Green is a three game series versus the Notre Dame Fighting Irish with the first two games in South Bend, Ind. and the final one at Steller Field on Mothers Day.
