Things are looking a little different in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) standings this week. After dropping points in a draw against Kent State, Bowling Green now sits in third place, with Eastern Michigan taking second and Western Michigan soaring to the top, taking first place while on a five-game winning streak.
Western Michigan gets its fifth win in a row against Miami
Western Michigan extends its winning streak against MAC opponents to 24 games after its 3-2 victory over Miami, with the game-winning goal scored in the 62nd minute of the game. Made by sophomore midfielder Meredith Vance.
Going 5-2-0, Western Michigan is taking on the very team they took first place from, Bowling Green. Bowling Green is looking to bounce back and sour Western Michigan’s unbeaten MAC streak and take back first place in the standings.
Central Michigan Blues put on pause
Even though Central Michigan still needs to snap their winless streak of the season, they gets to breathe a little easier after scoring their first goal of the season. Receiving one point after drawing 1-1 against Ball State, going from dead to now 10th place in the MAC.
The junior midfielder, Melaina Troy, was the one who punched in the goal for the Central Michigan Chippewas in the 60th minute. “The goal was great for our belief as a team, and I thought we were unlucky not to get another,” said Troy in a post-game interview.
“Really proud of this young team’s fight and resilience,” said Central Michigan’s head coach Jeremy Groves. “We’ve been in every game we’ve played in but have been a little unlucky at times.”
The Chippewas don’t have a match until Thursday, Sept. 25, welcoming Toledo. This Sunday, Ball State will be continuing its homestand, welcoming Kent State.
UMass gets first MAC competition win
The University of Massachusetts (UMass) got its first MAC win after shutting out Akron 1-0 this past Thursday. With this win, UMass secured three conference points and is square in the middle of the MAC standings in seventh place. While Akron falls to 12th.
Akron can hope to come back and earn some conference points against Buffalo on Sunday. Both teams are going in 0-1 against MAC opponents.
Runner-up Eastern Michigan take on Buffalo
This matchup was a MAC opener for both Buffalo and Eastern Michigan. It would end with Eastern Michigan on top. With these three conference points, Eastern Michigan is in second place in the MAC standings.
Buffalo will be facing off against Miami on Sunday, with both teams looking for a comeback ending with some conference points.
Rockets take home one point
The Toledo Rockets opened MAC play with a draw against Northern Illinois. With this draw, Toledo now has a 0-1-2 record when playing at home and is in sixth place, and Northern Illinois sits in ninth.
Toledo will be facing a confident Eastern Michigan on Sunday. Looking to bounce back against a winning second-place Eastern Michigan.
