Western Michigan and Eastern Michigan’s battle for first in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) standings seems to be over, as some last-minute victories by Miami and Buffalo, and a dominant Bowling Green winning 4-0 against Central Michigan, created some wiggle room for Western Michigan.
Western Michigan tears through Toledo
Western Michigan continues their tear against MAC opponents after a 3-0 victory over Toledo, extending their MAC unbeaten streak to 27 games. Although Toledo didn’t let up, putting on pressure down to the wire, recording three consecutive shots on goal, Western Michigan’s dominating attack throughout the match ultimately gave Toledo a run for their money.
This win solidified Western Michigan’s first-place spot in the MAC standings and helped get some wiggle room as Eastern Michigan fell from second to fourth.
After this matchup, Toledo concludes their three-game road trip and will face the Falcons in the Battle of I-75, while Western Michigan continues their homestand, going up against UMass.
Miami takes care of business in Akron
Despite Akron’s pressure and outshooting Miami 4-2 in the first half, a goal late in the second period, made by Maris Jennings after being deflected off the goal post, would determine the 1-0 outcome of this matchup.
With this win, Miami became one of three MAC teams to earn three victories against MAC opponents so far this season.
While Miami doesn’t have a match until next Sunday (Oct. 5), this Thursday, Akron will take on Buffalo, who are tied for second in the MAC standings alongside Miami.
Buffalo turns on win streak
Buffalo’s win streak extended to three games after facing Kent State in a physical battle for a third victory against the MAC. The lone goal was scored by senior forward Jasmine Guerber, marking her fourth goal of the season.
Ohio University draws with Eastern Michigan
This 1-1 draw leaves Eastern Michigan in fourth in the MAC, no longer in the battle for first place against Western Michigan. Ohio University got the early lead after outshooting Eastern Michigan 8-5 in the first half, and the equalizer for Eastern Michigan came in the 75th minute from sophomore Josie Langhans’ first career goal.
After this draw, Ohio University gets to head back home to face a well-rested Ball State, while Eastern Michigan will be on the road facing Kent State.
Northern Illinois and UMass match cancelled
Although Northern Illinois and UMass weren’t able to play on Sunday, due to unknown reasons, Northern Illinois will be facing Central Michigan on Thursday, while UMass will be taking on the powerhouse that is Western Michigan.
