BGSU women’s soccer (7-1-4, 2-0-3) remains unbeaten in Mid-American Conference (MAC) play, going on the road up I-75 to Toledo, drawing 0-0.
Despite the match not being Bowling Green’s best offensively, the Falcons will take home a point.
“It wasn’t our best performance for sure,” said head coach Chris Fox following the match. “Testament to Toledo, I think they fought from minute one to minute 90. They worked hard, [at] times felt like they wanted it more than we did.”
Fox was pleased with the effort his players showed, especially in the midfield, in a relatively cagey match.
“I think when you’ve got players that are battling and fighting and competing like we did and putting their bodies on the line, putting in blocks, going in hard for challenges, that’s what keeps it 0-0,” said Fox.
Under Fox, Bowling Green has become a team that plays with ‘possession with a purpose.’ Against Toledo, however, the team played directly.
“We ended up being a little too direct in this game,” said Fox. “I’d like to have seen us complete some more passes, maybe some more balls centrally, and link a little bit better there. I think that could have potentially led to some more chances up top.”
The Falcons were outshot five to three on the night, despite the front line not finding the back of the net. Sophomore goalkeeper Payton O’Malley and the rest of the Bowling Green backline stood strong.
“I couldn’t be prouder of them, honestly,” said O’Malley about her defense. “They do a great job keeping minimal shots, and even if they are shots on frame, it’s right to me. I don’t know what more I could ask for as a goalkeeper to keep it at that.
O’Malley’s fourth shutout of the season now puts her in third best in the MAC.
Fox and the Falcons will remain on the road as they take on Eastern Michigan (4-5-2, 2-1-2) on Sunday, Oct. 5. Kick-off for the match is set for 1:00 p.m. Falcon Media Sports Network will have full coverage of the game on bgfalconmedia.com
