BGSU women’s tennis (2-0) completed its Pennsylvania road trip with a convincing 6-1 victory over the Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) Crimson Hawks on Sunday, Oct. 12.
The win followed the team’s strong performance against Slippery Rock the previous day, with the Falcons dominating singles play, winning five of six matches, but dropping the doubles point after losing two of three matchups versus IUP.
Dominance in Singles Secures the Win
BGSU’s success was spearheaded by a near-sweep in singles competition.
Junior Tia Clemens played strongly, delivering a decisive win over Asel Calbay with scores of 7-5, 6-1.
The victory was quick for junior Libby Blair, who gave up only two games in her match, beating Charliz Tabili 6-2, 6-0.
Junior Qianyu Liu posted an equally dominant performance, shutting down Maria Moskaltsova 6-0, 6-2.
Other Falcons with straight-set victories included Freshman Kiera Taylor, defeating Lea von Kozierowski 6-4, 6-4, and sophomore Konstantina Adamopoulou, defeating Hannah Beitat 7-5, 6-1.
Doubles Duo Continues Streak
In doubles, the pairing of Blair and Taylor continued their success, securing the team’s only doubles victory by defeating IUP’s Moskaltsova and Annemiek Sterk 6-4.
However, IUP was able to claim the doubles point with two close victories:
Tabili and Isabelle Oikawa Torres (IUP) defeated Blair and Adamopoulou 6-4.
Calbay and Ifigeneia Kafka (IUP) edged out Clemens and sophomore Lucia Gaio 7-6 in a tiebreaker.
Up Next
The Falcons have a big one coming up yet this week as they head to Champaign, Illinois, for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regionals. The tournament, hosted by the University of Illinois, is set to begin on Thursday, Oct. 16.
