BGSU women’s tennis (2-0) traveled to Urbana, Illinois, this weekend for the competitive Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Championships, hosted by the University of Illinois.
Five Falcons represented BGSU across the singles and doubles brackets, marking the end of the team’s successful fall competitive schedule.
Adamopoulou’s Stellar Run Highlights Weekend
The standout story for the Falcons was the impressive performance of sophomore Konstantina Adamopoulou, whose participation in the event was a pleasant surprise.
“Konstantina was not on the original list we were going to enter. We were all surprised to learn that it did and that she would be competing,” said head coach Mike Bonnell.
Competing in the singles qualifying draw, Adamopoulou needed two victories to earn a spot in the main tournament bracket, and she delivered.
On Thursday, Oct. 16, she defeated redshirt sophomore Helin Alvarez of DePaul University, 6-3, 6-4, to advance. She then earned her place in the main draw by dominating the University of Michigan’s fourth-seeded Ava Bruno, 6-1, 6-3.
Bonnell praised Adamopoulou effort following the win, saying, “Konstantina has worked so hard this fall and really embodies what our team is all about. She is on an eight-match win streak, and the way she played today to knock off a very high-ranked Michigan player is a real point of pride for all of us.”
In the Singles Main Draw, her impressive tournament run came to an end with a 6-0, 6-3 loss to junior Autumn Rabjohns of Northwestern.
Main Draw Results
Junior Tia Clemens also competed in the main singles draw, playing a tight match that ultimately fell short as Clemens was defeated by University of Wisconsin junior Ellison Reynoldson, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.
In the Doubles Main Draw, both BGSU pairs fought hard against strong competition:
Junior Libby Blair and senior Leticia Fonseca fell to Michigan State’s Nina Plihal and Ellie Blackford, 8-4.
Freshman Kiera Taylor and Adamopoulou played a close match against Sophia Cisse-Ignatiev and Flora Johnson of Ohio State, but were defeated 8-6.
Looking Ahead to Spring
The ITA regionals mark the final competitive action for the Falcons this fall. Unfortunately, the matches against Grace College and Indiana University-East, originally scheduled for Oct. 25, have been canceled.
The team will now take some time away from competition as they train and prepare for their Mid-American Conference (MAC) schedule in the spring.
