This weekend had it all with an own-goal and a penalty kick deciding matchups, and a stalemate between two teams. But as the regular season winds down, things are just heating up.
Own-goal woes
The Western Michigan Broncos picked up their 12th win of the season and 21st all-time win against Akron this past Thursday. An own-goal by Akron would open up scoring in the first half, and the Broncos would do all the talking, winning 3-0 and outshooting Akron 12-1 (5-1 on goal).
With this win under their belt, Western Michigan will head back to Kalamazoo to take on Central Michigan in their final home game of the season on Sunday, Oct. 26, at 1 p.m.
Akron will hit the road one last time, heading up to Bowling Green, facing the Falcons on Sunday, Oct. 26, at 1 p.m.
Miami clinches postseason berth
In Ohio University’s final home game of the season, Miami clinched a postseason berth, winning 3-0 against the Bobcats.
After this win, Miami will be going on the road for the last time this season, facing Ball State on Sunday, Oct. 26, at 1 p.m.
Ohio University will also be hitting the road, taking on UMass this Sunday, Oct. 26, at 12 p.m.
Kent State earns a ticket to the MAC Tournament
Even as Kent State outshot the Rockets 12-8 (8-3 on goal), a penalty kick in the 32nd minute ended with a Kent State win and gave them a ticket to the MAC Championship.
Kent State will hit the road one last time this season to face Miami University on Wednesday, Oct. 29, at 3 p.m.
Toledo will play their final home game of the season against Buffalo on Sunday, Oct. 26, at 1 p.m.
The only exception
All but one match ended in a shootout this week, and it turns out the matchup between Bolwing Green and Buffalo would be the one exception. Despite Buffalo making momentum in the final 15 minutes of play, it would be to no avail.
“I’ll give this team a lot of credit because we’re not playing like one of the top teams in the conference, but they are finding ways to get really important results,” said Buffalo head coach Shawn Burke. “It’s not always pretty, but they’re doing enough, and hopefully we can right the ship and make a run. We have the talent; we just have to find a way to put it all together.”
