BGSU women’s basketball (11-10, 4-6 MAC) lost to the Toledo Rockets (11-8, 6-3 MAC) 59-49, but the real story of the rivalry matchup was how violently the game swung from one extreme to another. Basketball is often described as being a “game of runs,” and that’s exactly how this one played out, with both teams spending long stretches either riding a wave or trying to survive one.
For the first nine minutes, it looked like the Falcons were about to get run out of the gym. Toledo opened on a blistering 23-5 run, shooting 57.1 percent in the first quarter and pushing the pace before BGSU could settle in. The Rockets were scoring everywhere, and the Falcons had no answer.
“They stunned us a little bit in the first quarter and put us on our heels,” head coach Fred Chmiel said. “I just said take the emotion out of it and just think about basketball. Think about the thing that you have to do next. Take all the noise, all the environment, take it out of it, and just play basketball.”
The Falcons did just that, and the game then flipped. Over seven minutes in the second quarter, Toledo didn’t score at all, and BGSU seized control. The Falcons strung together a 17-0 run fueled by defensive stops, open-floor opportunities, and a more patient half-court attack. What had been an 18-point deficit evaporated to a single point, and with four minutes left in the half, the game was suddenly even again.
“They adjusted and elevated, and we failed to there for a minute,” Toledo head coach Ginny Boggess said. “So, I probably was as animated as you guys have seen me. I don’t like when people come into our house, and they’re tougher than us.”
The biggest swings were obvious, but the smaller, quieter ones ultimately shaped the night. After BGSU cut the margin to 23-22, Toledo responded with an 8-2 burst. In the third quarter, BGSU held Toledo to just two field goals, forcing a much slower, physical style.
BGSU broke through with its first lead of the game with roughly nine minutes left in the fourth before Toledo answered with a 7-1 counterpunch. The Falcons hung around somewhat before Toledo went on yet another run, closing the game on a 7-0 run.
The scoreboard says Toledo led for more than 36 minutes, but that masks how hard BGSU pushed the game back into chaos after the early avalanche and what the momentum truly was. It was a night defined by surges, droughts, and so many shifts.
“Find a way, find a way, and even when it’s ugly, find a way,” Boggess said. “But we didn’t fold…our composure there down the stretch was huge.”
The Falcons showed they could erase an 18-point hole, dictate pace, and turn the matchup into a defensive brawl. In the end, Toledo survived because it was able to manage the game of runs just a little better, especially in the end, as they delivered the final punches in a game built entirely on swings.
