BGSU Baseball (3-10, 1-2) fell to Kent State (11-4, 2-1) 13-1 at Schoonover Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Falcons gave up 11 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and committed three errors in the loss.
Bowling Green has not beaten the Golden Flashes in a series since 2014 and have not won a series in Kent since 2004.
Freshman left-handed pitcher Jackson Miller made his first collegiate start, allowing just one run, three hits and three walks with three strikeouts across four innings.
Similar to Saturday’s game, which saw the Falcons coming out on top 8-2, the Golden Flashes got off to a quick start. In the bottom of the first, Micah Rienstra-Kiracofe, the leadoff hitter for KSU, hit a solo home run to left field.
The only run of the day for the Falcons came courtesy of Vinny Salvione. The shortstop stepped up to plate in the top of the fourth and hit a long home run over the left field wall to tie up the game at one run.
Kent State would blow the game wide open at the bottom of the fifth, scoring 11 runs and batting around the lineup in an inning that saw the Falcons use three different pitchers. Luke Krouse was the last pitcher of the inning for the Falcons, eventually getting the Falcons out of the grueling inning.
The defense was not helping the pitching staff out either. In the fifth, they had two errors that extended the inning. After the inning officially ended, Kent State came away with a 12-1 lead.
The Golden Flashes added on another run in the bottom of the sixth inning after another costly error allowed a runner to advance and subsequently score. This would bring the score to 13-1, and after the Falcons weren’t able to find any offense in the top of the seventh, they called the game via the run rule. With Kent State winning by a final score of 13-1, they move to 2-1 in Mid-American Conference (MAC) play, while Bowling Green moves to 1-2 in the conference.
Next, the Falcons will head southwest to Dayton, Ohio, to face the Dayton Flyers in a standalone non-conference game. The game will take place Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Woerner Field at AES Ohio Stadium.
