During BGSU baseball’s 9-5 victory over the Dayton Flyers, two BGSU pitchers saw the mound in different roles than they had played so far this season.
The right-handed pitching duo of sophomore Carrson Sova and junior Andrew Heffernan saw their first action since the Samford series. The pair was seemingly looked at as the Saturday and Sunday starters before the Falcons’ first Mid-American Conference (MAC) series of the season against Kent State. A series in which neither of the two saw action.
In the young season so far, Sova and Heffernan each have started three games, those being against Georgia Tech, Western Carolina, and Samford. The only win came from Sova in his outing against Western Carolina.
Heffernan added another start under his belt for the Orange and Brown in Dayton, going four innings while allowing three runs on three hits, one walk, and three strikeouts.
Sova came in as relief for Heffernan, working through one inning while allowing one run on two hits and a strikeout.
Both pitchers were looking for bounce-back outings since their last pitching over a week prior.
“They pitched with a chip on their shoulder, they pitched with something to prove,” head coach Kyle Hallock said. “I talked to them yesterday about what we need to see out of them, and they delivered on it. If we’re going to be a good team in our league, we need them ready to roll and feeling good about things.”
With the Falcons following their Dayton trip with a weekend series against Miami (OH), only time will tell what pitchers will be seen in the upcoming matchup, but Hallock thinks this win could be a staple on the young season.
“I think it could mean something really good. I feel good about the way we went about our business and the level of baseball we can play,” Hallock said, “Hopefully, when we’re talking next week, maybe at the end of the season, it’s this drive down I-75 that got us right and got us going.”
