BGSU baseball (6-14, 3-6 hosted the Ohio University Bobcats (5-19, 2-6) in game three of a weekend series at Steller Field Sunday, losing 7-3.
Bowling Green still have not won a series this season (0-5). They are also winless when scoring under five runs (0-10), being outhit (0-14), trailing entering the ninth inning (0-11) and when playing on Sundays (0-4).
The Falcons left 15 runners on base between Mitta, Mancino and freshman shortstop Griffin Scheiderer.
Meanwhile, junior outfielder TJ Takats collected his first multi-hit performance of the season, going 3-for-4 with a walk, a strikeout and a double, his first extra-base hit of the year.
“It was good to get a little rhythm going,” Takats said. “But as a team we are sorry for how we have been playing, and it’s unacceptable.”
BGSU struck first in the third inning, as a line drive by freshman catcher Andrew DiLodovico got Seidel to third before he scored on a single by redshirt senior third baseman Anthony Mitta. A passed ball by the Bobcat catcher allowed DiLodovico and Mitta to advance to third and second, respectively, before Takats walked, loading the bases.
The Falcons were not able to capitalize on the situation, a common trend throughout the game. The Falcons led 2-0 but left seven runners on base through the first three innings.
BG extended their lead to 3-0 in the fifth frame, as senior center fielder Pauly Mancino drew a bases-loaded walk, allowing DiLodovico to score. However, Bowling Green ended the inning with the bases loaded for the second time.
Ohio took over in the sixth inning, scoring six runs while hitting six singles and a double.
“They got ground balls through the hole,” head coach Kyle Hallock said. “The ball didn’t go to where we were.”
The Bobcats added another run in the seventh inning, as senior third baseman drove in senior outfielder Cam Hill with a double, extending the lead to 7-3.
Shepherd drove in two runs while Hill collected four hits in the win.
Bowling Green sophomore right-handed pitcher CJ Boudreaux suffered his first loss of the season (1-1), allowing three runs on four hits in just 0.1 innings tossed.
Freshman right-handed Jackson Miller did not receive a decision in his third straight Sunday start, allowing three runs on six hits in 5.1 innings, while striking out two and walking two.
Meanwhile, Ohio junior right-hander Ethan Stewart earned his first win of the season (1-2), tossing 1.1 scoreless innings.
Senior left-handed arm Landon Price earned an unconventional save for the Bobcats, not allowing a run while pitching the final three innings of the game.
