BGSU baseball was in dire need of a victory against the Akron Zips on Thursday, when redshirt senior infielder Anthony Mitta stepped up on both sides of the ball to power the Falcons to a 6-2 victory over the Zips.
Mitta picked up multiple hits against Akron’s starting pitcher, junior right-hander Josiah Ross, including two singles that resulted in three BGSU runs.
“The first guy was filling up the strike zone early, so I was just trying to get a good swing off early,” Mitta said, “Then after a couple of good hits, I knew they were going to start spinning, breaking balls, so I was starting to sit on that.”
Mitta then finished off his hitting with a solo home run to center field, adding his first home run at Steller Field to his stellar performance.
“He’s been grinding a lot of things out, so it’s good to see him get some extension and hard contact,” head coach Kyle Hallock said. “He’s put good swings on balls the past couple of weeks, and he’s been competing hard and emptying the tank.”
Additionally, Mitta had a handful of impressive plays at first base, including multiple sliding backhands that forced much-needed Akron outs.
Mitta has recently moved over to first base after multiple other Falcons have become week-to-week and has been able to quickly pick up the position to help the team.
“I played a couple of games there before, but I feel good. I mean, being versatile is good. I try to pay attention to what everyone does in practice, so it’s been pretty smooth so far,” Mitta said.
The Falcons will look towards others to step up similarly to Mitta in their doubleheader against Akron on Friday, as Bowling Green has a chance to pick up their first series win of the season.
