BGSU baseball will play two midweek, non-conference games: Tuesday versus the University of Dayton Flyers and Wednesday against the Canisius University Golden Griffins. The Falcons will host Tuesday’s game before hitting the road for Buffalo, New York, Wednesday.
Tuesday’s game is set for 3 p.m. at Steller Field. Falcon Media Sports Network’s Adam Duffin and Jakub Kopasz will have the radio call on WBGU 88.1 FM.
Matchup History
Bowling Green holds the series lead over Dayton 49-24 dating back to 1926. BG is also 26-7 at home, not losing to the Flyers at Steller Field since 2016.
The Falcons have won the last three meetings against the Flyers. BG defeated Dayton in both meetings of the 2025 season and also won 9-5 on March 10 this season.
Bowling Green has only played Canisius University three times, once in 1989 before a doubleheader in 2018. Both games were held at neutral locations. Bowling Green won the first meeting, and split the doubleheader.
Scouting Bowling Green
The Falcons began April on a hot stretch, sweeping a three-game series against Akron before defeating Ohio State, Lourdes and Central Michigan.
However, Bowling Green did not win the series against Central Michigan. They enter into the week on a two-game losing streak after falling 5-0 Saturday and 21-13 Sunday.
The Bowling Green pitching staff is in a tough position after the Sunday loss. Every pitcher for the Falcons that pitched at least one-third of an inning was responsible for two runs. The only pitcher that did not give up a run was CJ Boudreaux, who only threw four pitches.
After seven pitchers threw in the game, the Falcons do not have many fresh arms to choose from.
On the other hand, Bowling Green put together a great offensive performance Sunday, stringing together their 14 hits to score 13 runs. All but one batter in the starting lineup did not tally a hit. The Falcons notched eight extra-base hits, including four home runs.
BG has gone 4-2 in midweek games, only losing to Cincinnati 11-1 Feb. 25 and 12-7 to the University of Findlay March 25.
The Falcons will enter the week with a chip on their shoulders, needing to get back on track before their weekend series at UMass.
Scouting Dayton
The Dayton Flyers hold a 18-16 overall record, with a 5-10 record in Atlantic 10 conference play. They are currently even in matchups on the road, going 7-7 in away games.
Dayton was just swept by A-10 opponent Saint Joseph’s in a three-game series. The first two games were close, with the first game even going into extra innings. The Flyers were then blown out 18-5 in the series finale.
Before that series, the Flyers played Bowling Green’s rival, Toledo, defeating the Rockets 9-5. Dayton is 5-4 against MAC opponents this season. They defeated Ohio three times in a four-game series and Toledo twice.
Currently, Dayton pitchers have allowed a team 6.67 ERA, just under BG’s 6.96 ERA. The Flyers counter their ERA with a .298 batting average, better than the Falcons’ .249 mark at the plate.
Scouting Canisius
The Canisius Golden Griffins have a 10-18 overall record entering the week. However, their home and away records tell a story of home field advantage. While the Griffins are 5-1 at home, they are just 5-17 in away games.
Canisius is 7-8 in Metro Atlantic Athletics Conference play, placing the team fourth-to-last in the conference standings.
Canisius is 3-10 in non-conference games, including their 12-game stretch to begin the season. Since the stretch, the Griffins have only played one other non-conference game, losing to St. Bonaventure 11-2 April 8.
Unlike the Falcons, the Golden Griffins have not and will not play more than one midweek game in any week this season.
The Golden Griffins come into the week on a series loss. They defeated the Niagara Purple Eagles 4-3 in a 12-inning Friday thriller, but were swept in the Saturday doubleheader.
Falcon Four Players to Watch
Anthony Mitta (Bowling Green No. 40)
The redshirt senior infielder began an eight-game hitting streak after going hitless in the Falcons’ win over Tiffin March 24. He has also scored six runs in the last six games.
Since the beginning of March, Mitta has had a hit in all but three of his 20 games played. He holds a .304 batting average on the season.
Lance Vickers (Bowling Green No. 29)
The junior catcher has only played in 14 games so far in the season, but he has started in every game of April.
Though a catcher, Vickers has recently been put in the lineup for his bat. He was the Falcons’ designated hitter in each of the weekend games versus Central Michigan.
Vickers has tallied six RBIs over the past four games and holds a .313 batting average.
Danny MacDougall (Dayton No. 21)
The graduate student has, by far, produced the most offense for the Flyers. Though he has not had one since April 4, he has had 18 multi-hit games across his 34 starts.
McDougall has also been consistent on defense, only committing two errors, including none since March 8, which is good for a .985 fielding percentage.
The freshman has been the consistent bat for the Golden Griffins as of late, claiming the role of Canisius’s designated hitter.
He has extended a nine-game hitting streak, tallying 14 hits in the nine games. Through his 26 starts, Cox has also stolen 15 bases on 16 attempts.
