BGSU baseball (15-20, 8-10) fell one run short against UMass (9-19, 5-13) Friday, as the Minutemen won 5-4 at Earl Lorden Field in Amherst, Massachusetts.
The first three innings began as a pitching duel between sophomore right-hander Carrson Sova and junior right-hander Callen Powers, allowing only three hits combined through three innings.
Sova dominated the UMass offense, going three up, three down, in both the first and second innings before he allowed one hit in the third inning.
For the Minutemen, Powers was steady on the mound for the first four innings, allowing only four base runners on two hits.
All five of the Minutemen runs were scored in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sova began the inning with a walk and hit by pitch, setting up two sacrifice flies.
UMass capitalized with a three-run homer to deep left field by junior catcher Ryan Kolben, his only hit of the day.
Sova was pulled after the fifth inning, finishing his outing giving up the five runs on four hits, three walks, two hit by pitches and six strikeouts.
Bowling Green’s offense picked up three runs to combat the Minutemen in the fifth inning. All three of the runs came off singles.
Sophomore outfielder Carter Mottice, sophomore infielder Brayden Curlis and redshirt senior infielder Anthony Mitta all picked up an RBI.
Curlis, Mitta and junior catcher Lance Vickers were the only Falcons with multiple hits on the day.
Powers finished his outing on the mound in the seventh inning, allowing seven hits, walking three and striking out six.
Bowling Green picked up another run in the eighth inning when junior outfielder Pauly Mancino scored of a sacrifice fly by freshman infielder Griffin Scheiderer.
Senior left-hander Jack Niedringhaus closed out the ninth inning for the Minutemen, striking out three Bowling Green batters.
BGSU and UMass will continue their Mid-American Conference (MAC) series with a doubleheader Saturday. First pitch of game one is set for noon, with the second game starting 30 minutes afterwards.
