BGSU baseball (16-25, 9-14) fell short against the Toledo Rockets (19-24, 14-9) Saturday afternoon at Steller Field. The game ended with a 3-1 final score, with pitching being the biggest factor in the game.
The pitchers for both teams had very impressive performances. Freshman pitcher for the Rockets, Hayden Frey, pitched a phenomenal game.
Through his eight innings on the mound, he pitched a shutout. He also threw eight strikeouts, his second-highest of the season. In addition to that, he only allowed one hit, which wasn’t until the fifth inning.
“[Frey] kept us off balance, and he did a really nice job,” said head coach Kyle Hallock.
Bowling Green’s pitcher, junior Andrew Heffernan, pitched an efficient game as well. He had a strikeout, eight flyouts, and nine groundouts. He allowed three runs off of six hits.
“He’s continued to buy into what we do,” said coach Hallock. “He’s really successful and did a nice job again today.”
As the game came to a close, Toledo decided to make a pitching change for the ninth inning. Junior Ryan Hughes and graduate student Deron Swanson saw time on the mound in the final inning for the Rockets.
In less than one inning, Hughes threw 38 pitches. He recorded two outs, two hits, and a run. Once the Falcons had two outs, Swanson came in to finish the game, which he did.
Bowling Green also made a pitching change, with junior Ethan Papacek coming in to pitch some of the seventh and the final two innings. He had two strikeouts and held Toledo to only one hit and no runs, giving the Falcons a chance to come back in the final inning.
The Orange and Brown had a chance to come back in the ninth inning. They were able to score a run, but solid pitching from UT prevented them from tying the game. Toledo walked out with a close 3-1 win.
