BGSU baseball (16-27, 9-15) opens May with a road trip against Eastern Michigan (13-28, 7-17 MAC) starting on Friday, May 1.
The Falcons enter the weekend on a three-game losing streak, losing the last two contests against rival Toledo and an out-of-conference matchup against Butler.
The recent losing streak is indicative of the results they’ve had for most of the season, as the Falcons have failed to win back-to-back games outside of a six-game win streak to start April, where they earned wins over Akron (3), Ohio State, Lourdes, and Central Michigan.
Meanwhile, the Eagles enter the contest 2-4 over their last two weekends of MAC play, averaging over 6.5 runs compared to 10 runs allowed in that time.
The crucial question mark surrounding the team is, undeniably, the pitching staff, which has 14 different arms who have pitched 10 or more innings, but only one pitching over 35 innings (John Carmichael, 50 IP). The team’s best ERA comes from a player only pitching 6.2 innings this year, with every other player on the roster averaging a 5.93 ERA or worse.
Despite the recent lack of success, the Falcons are not yet out of contention for a MAC Tournament berth. 5 games separate the Falcons (10th place) from Ball State, the last team in the tournament if the season were over today.
A sweep over the Eagles would guarantee the Falcons stay alive another week in the hunt for the tournament, but that will be no small task for a team that has only one winning MAC series this season, in the April sweep of Akron.
