After a five-hour rain delay, the Falcons and the Broncos stepped onto Steller Field at 8:00 p.m. to begin their second game of their three game Mid-American Conference (MAC) series. This start time made the game the latest game played in Steller Field history.
The 2026 season has brought multiple historical events to Steller Field, with the addition of turf and stadium lights being the forefront of such. These additions made it so the 3:00 p.m. first pitch was able to be pushed back to the 8:00 p.m. time slot.
In the ballgame, Western Michigan jumped out early with a 2-0 lead to start the first inning, not having any problems playing under the lights.
“If you get off to a quick start like Western Michigan did and we’re chasing, it’s obviously to their advantage,” head coach Kyle Hallock said.
The Broncos combined their quick start offensively with superb pitching from their graduate student right-handed pitcher Ricky Kidd. Even with the game being pushed back five hours, Kidd was able to dominate on the mound, going six innings on only four hits and four strikeouts.
“He did a nice job of establishing his fastball and mixing off that,” Hallock said. “It was tough to get him out of rhythm tonight. He’s been good all year for them.”
Even with the change in start time and the 7-1 loss to the Broncos, Hallock and the Falcons have confidence heading into their final game at Steller Field this season.
“That’s the game; it’s tight, it’s razor thin. The difference between their record and our record is four or five pitches, four or five plays,” Hallock said.
Bowling Green also knows what is at stake heading into the series finale on Sunday, with their goal of heading to Avon, Ohio for the MAC tournament almost being out of reach.
“For us to continue to have an opportunity to play beyond the regular season, we have zero margin for error, and we got to get ready to go right away tomorrow,” Hallock said.
