On Friday, Bowling Green baseball (31-17, 17-10 MAC) traveled to South Bend to battle Notre Dame (27-19, 12-15) and fell to the Fighting Irish 10-0.
The game ended after the seventh inning due to the run rule going into effect.
“They came out and punched first, and we helped them out, and we can’t help him the way we did,” head coach Kyle Hallock said postgame. “[We showed] flashes of being able to do and play right with them, but just not enough for a full nine innings.”
Sophomore Jack Radel started on the mound for Notre Dame. Despite allowing two baserunners early, he worked through the inning to keep BGSU off the board.
Junior Jacob Turner made his first start since throwing four perfect innings and earning a win against Toledo at Fifth Third Field a week ago.
Turner walked the first two batters he faced before sophomore Davis Johnson smacked a two-RBI double into left field to open the scoring.
Despite the Fighting Irish loading the bases with no outs, Turner stayed calm and delivered three consecutive strikeouts to keep the score 2-0.
In the top of the second, redshirt freshman Caden Bates advanced to second base with two outs. Freshman Alex Laird singled in the infield, but junior Estevan Moreno threw out Bates at the plate to end the frame.
Notre Dame scored again in their half of the second half off another Johnson double to bring the score to 3-0. However, the Fighting Irish weren’t done scoring yet in the inning. Parker Brzustewicz rocked an RBI single into left field, which was followed by a Johnson score off a wild pitch.
Up 5-0, Moreno tapped a bloop single into the outfield to score Brzustewicz before the end of the inning.
“I think Jacob [Turner] realized his stuff was plenty good enough about the fifth or sixth hitter into the game,” Hallock said. “Credit to Notre Dame for capitalizing on what the first four or five hitters create traffic, and create some runs.”
After a quiet stretch, the Falcons gave up a run in the fifth on Notre Dame trickery, making it 7-0. Graduate student Connor Hincks intentionally got into a rundown to let Johnson score.
Despite a leadoff triple by senior Gunner Antillon in the sixth, the Falcons were unable to reach home, keeping the tally 7-0.
In the bottom of the seventh, with two runners on base, graduate student Brady Gumpf hammered his fourth home run of the year to end the game.
Turner picked up the loss for the Falcons, dropping to 4-3 this season. Radel earned his sixth victory of the year for the Fighting Irish.
BGSU’s next opportunity to get back in the win column will be on Saturday, May 10 at 2:00 p.m. Falcon Media Sports Network’s Tyler Kavalecz and Chas McNeil will put on the headsets for the game on Falcon Radio.
