With the 456th pick in the 15th round of the 2025 MLB draft, the Houston Astros have selected former BGSU baseball two-way star DJ Newman.
Newman becomes the second Falcon to be drafted in the last two years, along with former teammate and now Chicago White Sox player Nathan Archer, who was selected in the 2024 MLB draft.
The right-handed pitcher and outfielder transferred to Tennessee on June 22 after the 2025 season, still having one year of eligibility under his belt.
Over his three seasons at BGSU, Newman hit .388 with 20 doubles, five triples, 15 home runs, 64 RBIs, 55 walks, and 75 strikeouts in 101 games and 89 starts. He also tallied a 7-4 record, a 3.60 ERA, 91 strikeouts, 19 walks, and a .248 opponent batting average across 85 innings pitched, 27 appearances and 15 starts while on the mound.
The Archbold, Ohio, native earned First Team All-Mid-American Conference (MAC), MAC Pitcher of the Year, and four freshman All-American team honors in 2023 before earning Second Team All-MAC honors in 2024 during his time with the Orange and Brown.
Newman is now the 54th player in BGSU baseball history to be selected in the MLB draft.
