BGSU baseball (2-7) fell to Samford (4-6) 7-4, on Saturday afternoon.
The Falcons scored two runs in the first inning. Junior infielder Vinny Salvione doubled to left center and later scored after freshman catcher Andrew DiLodovico grounded out to third.
In the next at-bat, redshirt junior infielder Brady Birchmeier singled through the left side of the infield and redshirt senior infielder Anthony Mitta scored to make it 2-0 after the top of the first.
Samford responded in the bottom of the inning as redshirt junior outfielder Luke Boykin singled into center field to send senior infielder Jeffrey Ince to home. With two runners on base, sophomore pitcher Carrson Sova forced a flyout to left field to end the inning 2-1, in favor of BG.
In the second inning, redshirt senior outfielder Zach Horky hit a leadoff home run to left field and elevated the lead back to two runs. However, the Bulldogs responded in the bottom of the inning with a run of their own.
Sophomore infielder Jake Souders singled into right field to score junior infielder Jackson Harris. The run came with two outs and after an error on the previous play.
BG’s 3-2 lead went away in the third inning after three runs by Samford. Sophomore infielder Gus Gandy doubled down the left field line to score senior infielder Parker McDonald.
Following the double, Sova threw a wild pitch and Harris scored while Gandy moved to third base. Sova faced one last batter and allowed Ince to single to right field and Gandy to score. Redshirt sophomore pitcher Nate Kress replaced Sova and pitched the final 5.1 innings.
The Bulldogs got back on the board in the eighth inning and finally scored off Kress. Souders singled up the middle to score Harris and junior catcher Cade Carr hit a sacrifice fly to score Ince. Samford led 7-3, and the Falcons had only one more chance in the top of the ninth.
BG’s last chance at the plate started with Salvione hitting a single to score junior outfielder Pauly Mancino during a short rally. Sophomore pitcher Zak Spurrier put an end to any last gasp effort by the Orange and Brown to close the game.
The Falcons will try and win the series against Samford on Sunday at noon.
