BGSU baseball (2-9, 0-1) fell to Kent State (10-3, 1-0) 8-1 after a late-game, offensive surge from the Golden Flashes.
The game started out slow, with only one run scoring in the first five innings. Junior shortstop Vinny Salvione had a solo home run in the fourth inning, which ended up being the only run that would come for the Falcons.
Senior Jacob Turner was the starting pitcher for BG, throwing 91 pitches and going 6.1 innings on the mound.
“He was outstanding,” Bowling Green head coach Kyle Hallock said. “He went deeper into the game than he has.”
Turner gave up the first of two Kent State home runs to designated hitter Kolton Schaller in the sixth inning. The home run put Kent State in the lead 3-1. Turner was replaced by redshirt senior Ty Roder, who allowed another three-run home run in the seventh.
The second home run was hit by sophomore right fielder Sawyer Solitaria. He finished the game with two runs scored and three runs batted in.
Kent State outhit the Falcons 11-4. The Flashes had senior Ciaran Caughey as their starting pitcher, who only allowed two hits. Caughey also tallied nine strikeouts on 78 pitches in his seven innings pitched.
“He switched up the scouting report a little bit. Different from how he’s pitched the first two weeks,” Hallock said. “He did a good job, obviously, with keeping us out there with his secondary stuff.”
Bowling Green fell to a 2-9 record and had their losing streak extended to three games. The Flashes extended their winning streak to five games, and they are now 5-0 at home, Olga Mural Field.
“We played it well for the better part of six innings, and we were kind of right there the whole way. We were about four or five pitches away from being in a really good spot,” Hallock said. “I expect us to play even better tomorrow.”
BGSU will take on the Golden Flashes again Saturday for game two of the three-game road series. The game’s first pitch is set for 3 p.m.
