BGSU Baseball (6-14, 3-6) faced off against the Tiffin Dragons at Steller Field, claiming a 7-6 victory.
“It’s been proven and it was nice to see the guys come together for a single job,” said head coach Kyle Hallock. “It’s a big deal that we show up.”
Sophomore infielder Brayden Curlis drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning, marking Bowling Green’s first walk-off win of the season.
Tiffin scored one in the first inning to start the game but left two runners on base. The Dragons left eight on throughout the game.
Freshman shortstop Griffin Scheiderer began the Falcon’s rush on a walk that led to a passed ball and wild pitch putting Scheiderer on third base.
Medina, Ohio native and sophomore pitcher Nick Hayes forced the Falcons scoreless in the third inning. A defensive effort as BG was outhit 5-3 after the first three innings
Another sophomore from Medina, Ohio, Julian Hernandez added the defect with a solo home run to left field.
Hernandez delivered the fourth homer at Steller field on the new turf and renovated field.
Not being able to capitalize would be another downfall as the Falcons left seven runners on base, throughout the game. While an improvement from 15 left on base in their previous game, it forced BG into extra innings.
“They pitched with a chip on their shoulder … good for them,” said Hallock.
Part of Tiffin’s success came from the mound, having 10 pitchers and not a single one throwing more than 40 pitches. As a team the Dragons accumulated 12 strikeouts, seven more than Bowling Green who recorded five.
Even with a BGSU rally in the bottom of the sixth inning, it ended with two runners left on base.
The Falcons rallied with two outs and scored in back-back innings.
The Orange and Brown struggled connecting on offense, being outhit by Tiffin 12-9.
Even with the struggles, senior designated hitter Zack Horky earned his third home run of the season. The homer shifted the momentum for Bowling Green and tied the game 5-5.
Junior catcher Lance Vickers scored to give BG the lead after a sacrifice ground ball from redshirt sophomore Alex Laird.
BGSU finds momentum during the week, being 4-4 during weekday action this season, much better than their weekend record of 3-9.
Bowling Green stays at home to defend their turf against the Findlay Oilers (15-9, 7-1) at 6 p.m.
“Let’s see if we can do it twice in a row for the first time as a team,” said Hallock.
