BGSU baseball continues their road trip with a series against the UMass Minutemen in Amherst, Massachusetts.
First pitch between the conference foes is set for 3 p.m. Friday, 1 p.m. Saturday and noon Sunday.
Matchup History
The teams have played six times before—all in non-conference play—with the series being tied 3-3.
Every previous meeting was at a neutral site during spring trips. The last matchup was in 1995 when Bowling Green won 10-2.
Scouting Bowling Green
The Falcons are on the outside looking in for the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Tournament, sitting in seventh place in the conference standings with a 15-20 overall and 8-10 conference record.
BGSU has faced the toughest schedule in the MAC and 69th toughest schedule in the country this season.
Bowling Green is coming off a 9-3 win over Canisius in Buffalo, New York, Wednesday.
However, before the win over the Golden Griffins, the Falcons were outscored 49-24 in a four game stretch against Central Michigan (three games) and Dayton.
BG’s offense has struggled for most of the season to find consistency.
The Falcons rank 10th in the MAC with 195 runs scored, 11th with a .253 batting average and last with a .348 on-base percentage (OBP). They have also struck out 329 times, which is the most in the conference and a 28.7% strikeout rate.
However, the bats have shown some power, ranking second in the MAC with 10 triples, fifth with 35 home runs and eighth with 60 doubles.
Bowling Green’s pitching has also been inconsistent.
The Falcons rank eighth in the MAC with a 7.17 ERA and 11th with a .319 opponent batting average.
However, BGSU has struck out 320 batters, the most in the conference.
Scouting UMass
UMass enters the series as one of the worst teams in the MAC.
The Minutemen sit in 10th place in the conference standings with a 9-19 overall and 5-13 conference record.
Massachusetts enters the matchup fresh off a 17-12 non-conference loss to Harvard Tuesday.
However, before that loss, UMass swept Eastern Michigan in Ypsilanti, Michigan, outscoring the Eagles 33-17 across the three games.
The Minutemen’s offense has been subpar this year.
They rank last in the MAC with 174 runs scored. Additionally, UMass places eighth in the MAC with a .380 OBP and ninth with a .269 batting average, a .411 slugging percentage and 29 home runs
The Minutemen’s pitching staff has also been lackluster.
UMass ranks 10th in the MAC with an 8.06 ERA and 233 strikeouts.
However, they have allowed just a .276 opponent batting average, the fifth-best mark in the conference.
Falcon Four Players to Watch
Andrew DiLodovico (Bowling Green No. 25)
The freshman catcher is riding a team-best 18-game on-base streak that dates back to March 13.
DiLodovico is developing power in his swing as he continues to get comfortable at the Division I level. Over the past three games against Central Michigan, Dayton and Canisius, he is hitting 7-13 with four runs scored, five RBIs and four home runs.
The Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan, native leads the Falcons with a .315 batting average, a .402 OBP, a .522 slugging percentage, a ,924 OPS, five home runs and eight hit by pitches.
Anthony Mitta (Bowling Green No. 40)
Mitta saw his nine-game hitting streak end Wednesday against Canisius.
Over the nine-game span, the redshirt senior infielder hit .459 (17-37) with 10 RBIs, four doubles and three home runs.
The Mount Olive transfer leads Bowling Green with 20 RBIs and 37 hits. He also ranks second on the team with nine doubles, four home runs and a .500 slugging percentage.
Ty Fox (UMass No. 3)
The redshirt freshman infielder/outfielder has been one of the most consistent bats in the order for UMass.
Fox leads the Minutemen and ranks 10th in the MAC with a .359 batting average. He also places second on the team with a .455 OBP, a .534 slugging percentage, a .989 OPS, 21 runs scored, 24 RBIs and 13 stolen bases.
The Ohio State transfer is riding a seven-game hitting streak. He has driven in five runs over the past three games.
Gavin O’Brien (UMass No. 16)
The sophomore outfielder/infielder has been the most electric bat for the Minutemen this season.
O’Brien leads UMass with a .604 slugging percentage, a 1.018 OPS, nine doubles, seven home runs and 31 RBIs.
O’Brien is an all-around athlete, serving as the captain for the baseball, basketball and soccer teams in high school. Over the last three games, he has hit 9-16 with four runs scored, 13 RBIs, two doubles and three home runs.
