BGSU baseball squandered numerous opportunities at the plate in their 7-3 loss to Ohio Sunday at Steller Field, dropping their third consecutive Mid-American Conference (MAC) series.
The Falcons left 15 runners on base, compared to seven by Ohio.
“We just didn’t have the timely hitting today,” junior outfielder TJ Takats said. “Timely hitting is a big thing.”
Even though Bowling Green managed to get their leadoff runner on base in eight of the nine innings, the Falcons hit just .100 (1-10) with two outs and .138 (4-29) with runners on base.
“Just in some cases trying to do too much, in other cases not doing enough,” head coach Kyle Hallock said. “Got the leadoff guy on eight out of nine innings. It’s a stat we value; didn’t cash in.”
Conversely, Ohio hit .333 (3-9) with two outs and .368 (7-19) with runners on base in the win.
Senior third baseman Anthony Mitta, freshman shortstop Griffin Scheiderer and senior center fielder Pauly Mancino each left five runners on base apiece at the dish.
In the first inning, Mitta lined out to shortstop with runners on first and second base.
In the second frame, Sheiderer grounded out to second base with runners on first and third.
Mancino and Sheiderer each left the bases loaded in the third and fifth inning, respectively.
Mitta grounded out to first with senior infielder Sam Seidel on second base in the sixth.
Mancino struck out looking with Takats on first in the seventh.
In the eighth, Mitta flew out to center field with runners on the corners.
Finally, Mancino flew out to right field to end the game, leaving Takats on first.
Overall, Bowling Green have scored just 89 runs with 84 RBIs in their first 20 games, ranking last for both in the MAC.
The Falcons are also hitting only .229, second-worst in the conference, just two points above Eastern Michigan.
